Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370704 AB INTRODUCTION: After one and a half years of starting the programme for HIV prevention among truckers at a transit point near Madras, a programme assessment was carried out on the impact of intervention. OBJECTIVES: The following components of the programme were assessed a. Knowledge and awareness about HIV/AIDS B. Fears, beliefs and misconceptions. c. Condom usage, safe sex and impact on sexual practices. d. STD infection and treatment. METHOD: Interview schedules were used to conduct face-to-face interviews. Information from an accidental sample of 50 respondents were collected and analysed. FINDINGS: 90% of respondents are aware about HIV/AIDS. 54% of respondents are aware of the difference between STDs and AIDS while 66% are aware that AIDS is incurable. 47% are aware that usage of condoms during penetrative sex prevents HIV .68% of respondents believe that HIV affected cannot lead an active and normal life. 44% fear that homosexual relationships lead to AIDS. 46% believe that excess of the body heat causes STDs. 54% believe that AIDS is spread through anal and oral sex. It is found that 44% of the truckers use condoms consistently thereby increasing condom utilisation by 18%. Only 10% perceived the risk of getting HIV infection. STD treatment facility component of the programme remains weak.
